Hot news:

Motor vehicle thefts and burglaries continued throughout September. Donna Valentino contributes: For the current crime statistics, go to http://www.cor.net/WorkArea/showcontent.aspx?id=6028 and for historical information, go to http://www.cor.net/police.aspx?id=4580. One of the events listed is described in vivid personal detail by Larry Randall, below.

This from Larry Randall:

Someone attempted to steal my Chrysler Sebring convertible from in front of my house on Kettering Court.  They broke off something in the ignition and damaged the interior and exterior.

The officer also discovered that another car was attempted and yet another had been successfully stolen one street over.  This happened in the same time frame -- we believe between 0100 and 0630.

Garland PD stopped the stolen vehicle, but the driver ran away and was not captured.  He did leave some good prints on my car and that one, however. :-)

Please be aware of anyone who appears "out of place" in the neighborhood -- especially after dark.

This from Donna Valentino:

See the link:    http://www.propertyfraudalert.com/collintx/

The Collin County Clerk has made a free Property Fraud Alert available to property owners.  This is in response to the incredible amount of property fraud that has occurred in the past few years.  Targets:  elderly homeowners—then it spread.  If you’ve seen in the paper; young families being booted out of their homes cos shady mortgage brokers & appraisers doing dirty sales to each other with unsuspecting homeowners clueless & homeless; and mortgage co’s holding the bag (guess who pays for that).

IF someone tries to file a new deed on your property—YOU GET AN EMAIL ALERT!  Phone/txt is also an option.  This would be a great item to post on the HOA website.  It only took me like 20 seconds to register and you get a confirmation email, too.  Not sure if this is state or nationwide or not, but I’d sure register my parents, grandparents, etc.—CAN’T be too safe these days.

This from Debi Dubord:

You can now dial 2-1-1 to receive over-the-phone medical guidance about what you should do if you or a family member have flu symptoms.

The state’s 2-1-1 health information helpline is now staffed with medical professionals who can provide information about managing flu symptoms

and advice on when to seek medical care from a physician or emergency room. This will help you make informed decisions about how to care for yourself and your family. The guidance is not intended to replace specific instructions people receive from their physicians.

The 2-1-1 staff also can provide general flu information and vaccine availability information for individuals and health care providers. Calls are answered round-the-clock. Callers are instructed to choose a language and then press “6” for flu information and guidance.   Basic flu symptoms include fever, cough and sore throat that usually come on suddenly. Most cases are relatively mild to moderate and do not need emergency treatment. Most people who have H1N1 flu or seasonal flu just need appropriate fluid intake, fever-reducing medication, rest and careful monitoring.  Recovering at home also lessens the burden on the health care system. People with underlying health conditions who think they have the flu should contact their health care provider. For more information about flu in Texas,  www.TexasFlu.org.

Moving on: It has become apparent to me that I am unable to respond in a timely fashion to requests for communication flashes, due to distractions in my personal life. Now that my family and I have moved out of the state, I will need to stop sending out the newsletter. I enjoyed the opportunity to serve the community. Dave Pauletti has been attempting to find a relief for me. If you are interested, please contact him at [David Pauletti (dpaulett) dpaulett@cisco.com]

Sept 2009

Combined Community Garage Sale Oct 9, 10, 11 (Fri. Sat. Sun)

We are joining with our neighbors in Knight’s Bridge to have a bigger and better event than ever. Both neighborhoods have had successful events in the past.

Now we are hoping that our combined 600+ homes can have an even bigger sale! Together we can draw lots of buyer and have some fun!

Our HOAs will advertise the event on Craigslist and in the DMN. We also hope to put up banners on entrances at Renner and Murphy roads. By the way have you seen construction beginning on new monument signs at several entrances?

You would put up your own signs directing shoppers to you own sale. Your family may participate in all or part of the weekend of course. We all love these sales but PLEASE  be sure to be respectful and courteous to your neighbors. Put up signs only on our common spaces or if on a neighbor’s property only with their express permission. Likewise remove all signs at the end of your sale.

We hope for lots of participation and a big success as it has been in the past, even better!

Hot news:

Criminal activity close to home (my home). As many of you may know, I am selling my house at 3119 Stonehenge Drive. Last week, 4 young men that did not appear to be qualified buyers knocked on the door unannounced and attempted to “scream their way in,” i.e., demanding to see the interior of my house. Luckily, my family members who are taking care of the house handled the situation correctly, warning them through closed door to go away, or the police would be called (indubitably the best course of action in this situation). The men fled in a car that was parked just a few dozen meters down the street, and the police arrived shortly afterward to do the report.

Cool news:

From Randy Roland [mailto:rroland@mckinneytexas.org]:

The city is currently marking sidewalks in our neighborhood that need to be replaced because of the slope or separation that causes a trip hazard.  When the repairs are going to be complete is still unknown.  Door hangers from the city should be placed on your doors providing information if your sidewalk is slated to be repaired.

From Donna Valentino: The Home Safety Council wants to help you make the most of Fire Safety Month in your community this October. So they have partnered with Lowe's to provide fire and life safety educators with a premier local educational event.

Safety Saturday is a free public event that will be held in the parking lot of Lowe's stores on Saturday, September 26, 2009. Across the country, participating Lowe's stores will be teaming up with their fire safety and other community safety neighbors for this one-day event. It's designed to provide educational fun for the entire family.

From Tom Pierce Tom Pierce [tomepierce@hotmail.com]:

I do roofs.  I am working with North Texas Roofing and have many years of experience.  I am also a WHOA home owner of over 14 years.  We had a hail storm a short time ago.  However it was not of a size that would have damaged any of our roofs.  BUT, the storm on 2003 did damage our roofs.  If a roof has not been replaced since the storm of 2003, then it should be replaced.  Almost any roofing company will do a good job replacing the roof, but North Texas Roofing goes well beyond just replacing the roof.  We take care, concerning the entire property.  We have often been told that the yard looks far better after the roof construction than before we started the roofing process.  We did almost 500 roofs last year and still have an A+ rating with the BBB.  I also understand that we have nothing but positive comments on Angies List.

Home owners should check our any company being invited into their home.  They can refer to the BBB www.dallas.bbb.org and to Angie’s List www.angieslist.com.

From Dora Vasquez [Dora.Vasquez@UTSouthwestern.edu]:

I, too, am a realtor in the area....I can be reached at 972-333-9126...

In addition, I am selling a really nice timeless dinnette set...see attached for a picture...If anyone is interested they may reach me at 972-333-9126....The picture just not do it justice by the way...

I'm also selling another smaller round dinnette set for a kitchen nook that is a very light maple color...Do not have a picture for this one but also very nice...

Hot news:

Debbie Hyatt- Windsor Estates- said a cotton mouth snake was found in her neighbor’s back yard!

Contributed by Jerry Parker, Baskerville Dr.:

For the Did You Know department:

Did you know that if you have a gas leak and call 911, they will dispatch a fire truck to turn off the gas but will not call Atmos Energy?  911 operator says it is your responsibility to call the gas company.  So keep that Atmos Energy number handy.

Did you know that if you decide to use your PC to find the Atmos number, their site does not have a BIG EMERGENCY NUMBER icon, and in your haste you have to search for a number. (gas is still leaking)

Did you know when you call the Atmos Energy customer service number, you still have to go through a “Dial 1 if…” menu and answer some questions before getting to a human?  (gas is still leaking)

Did you know that the Fire Department will also call Atmos Energy with the news that they turned off the gas?  Kind of an indirect 911 call.

Did you know that what all of us fear can happen?  Yes, those gas meters in the alleys can be hit by cars or trucks and cause a gas leak.

How do I know all this?  It happened.  Something hit our neighbor’s gas meter in the alley and broke the pipe leading to the meter.  My wife smelt the gas when walking the dog and I searched the alley until I found it.  The neighbors weren’t home so I learned answers to all the above questions.

Animal predator (contributed by Tammy Johnson, Baskerville):

Some time this morning our cat was attacked by something. Not to make it too graphic, but she was in 2 pieces. I’m not

sure if there is a coyote or bobcat in the area, but everyone needs to be really cautious with their pets.  We did not see

anything or hear anything.  Our kitty used to sit under the tree in the front yard and watch the birds in the AM.  This was before Miller Elem was in session this morning [Fri 29-May].

Undoubtedly, you have already received the previous news flash of suspicious activity in the neighborhood. Please remember that the threat is indeed real, and calling the police is normally NOT an overreaction – let the police sort it out. An excellent summary of what to do when is available at the bottom of this newsletter, as dictated by Officer Payne and Detective Perry of the Richardson PD, our guests at the Annual Meeting last Tuesday.

Richardson residents can sign up for an automated e-mail weekly crime tip from the Richardson Police Department. Check out this sample:

Weekly Crime Tip: Always acknowledge someone at your front door. You don’t want to give the impression to a would be burglar that your home is vacant. Never open your door to a stranger. Keep the door locked and speak through the door using phrases like “we can’t come to the door” to give the impression you are not alone.

Stinky news

A resident asked me to gently remind dog owners to be courteous. I will quote directly:

“Could you put in yet another plea for residents who walk their dogs to clean up after them?  Seeing dog poop scattered around is disgusting, unsanitary, and very unsightly for our neighborhood.   (I counted around 10 on a recent walk to school along Carrington from just Sowerby to Coventry...) Newspaper bags and plastic grocery sacks work great and give you a chance to re-use some of that plastic!”
